I presently work as a Consultant Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician at University Hospitals Birmingham, UK. I am also an Honorary Reader for the University of Birmingham. I completed specialist training in Edinburgh. I have particular interest in portal hypertension and vascular liver disease and was awarded a Doctorate in 2005 for my thesis entitled “Clinical and haemodynamic studies in portal hypertension”. I am Chief Investigator of the CALIBRE trial (carvedilol versus variceal band ligation in primary prevention of variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis) which is funded by a NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) grant worth £2.3. CALIBRE has the potential to be largest ever Phase III clinical trial in cirrhosis. I am involved in other clinical trials at Principal Investigator level. I lead a multidisciplinary rare diseases clinic for patients with vascular liver diseases, and am an active member of the EASL-VALDIG. I have over 60 publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. I am in the editorial board for World Journal of Gastroenterology and European Medical Journal – Hepatology. I am a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) liver section (2017-2020). I am lead author of the UK Guideline on variceal bleeding and manage 13 BSG guidelines in Liver Disease being co-author for two guidelines in development. I was recently appointed by The British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) to lead UK’s first ever Portal Hypertension Specialist Interest Group (SIG).
