Symposium: Multidisciplinary management of alcoholic liver disease

 Metabolism, alcohol and toxicity
 Webcasted session

West 2
15 April 2018 10:30 - 11:30

The development of chronic liver disease is frequently linked to lifestyle choices—none more so than alcohol-related liver injury.  Successful treatment can not be directed solely at the liver disease per se but must encompass the underlying life-style challenges.  Thus management of the underlying alcohol misuse/dependence is a key issue.  However, other management issues may also arise in these patients including: psychiatric co-morbidity, co-occurring drug misuse and other life-style-linked co-morbidities such as obesity and chronic hepatitis C infection.  Thus effective management needs a programmed, multidisciplinary approach.
In this symposium the management of the underlying alcohol-related liver disease will be discussed, highlighting the paucity of specific treatments and the likelihood of more specific drug targeting in the future.  The place of liver transplantation, including the vexed question of live donation will be debated and placed in context.  The management of the underlying alcohol misuse/dependence, including the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy will be reviewed and guidance provided.  Finally, the management of possible co-occurring drug dependence and co-morbidities will be addressed including approaches to both the adjuvant liver injury and the additional life-style issues.
This symposium is a ‘must attend’ for everyone who encounters these complex patients and would appreciate guidance in their management.
